Conference, day one

My question about wireless access at the convention centre, and bringing my Tablet, was answered last night when I attended the opening ceremony. I want to ‘travel’ as light as possible, so the idea of lugging the Tablet around all day doesn’t appeal at all. Thankfully there are numerous computers around the convention centre for the use of delegates, so I should be able to hop onto one when I get the urge to blog something. I’m really pleased that there will be a fair amount of blogging about this conference, as, apart from blog the conf, we also have the official blog (see if you can spot CW the jammy git).

I wonder how many will be at this morning’s breakfast…

Librarians, librarians everywhere!

There must be simply hundreds of library folks in Perth at the moment! HUNDREDS. This fact was brought home to me last night while M and I were having a drink and dinner with Tom and Sarah at the Brass Monkey in Northbridge. While sitting there I saw at least three librarians I know - and who knows who else was lurking in the shadows? Of course we’ll have mere hundreds at our conference, compared to the 17,000 in New Orleans this year for the American Library Association’s conference.

Having dinner with Sarah and Tom was good, because I’m now a bit more excited about the conference. It still doesn’t seem quite real to me - perhaps because I’m not going anywhere special for it - but I suspect I’ll be quite in the mood (so to speak) after I go to the first-timers’ breakfast tomorrow morning. And it was good to catch up with Tom, and to finally meet Sarah, after weeks of email and blogging interaction! (I’m getting used to these sorts of first-online-then-facetoface meetings, I think.)

The week ahead…

I’m not sure how this week is going to go. Today and tomorrow are going to be busy days, mainly because I’ll need to do five days’ work in two days, before the conference begins on Wednesday. And we’ll be having lots of visitors from interstate in the library, today and tomorrow.

Unfortunately it looks like it’s going to be a wet week this week. The weather bureau is forecasting showers:

Wednesday: A shower or two. Minimum 10°C (50° F) Maximum 20°C (68°F)
Thursday : Showers, windy. Min 11°C (51.8°F) Max 20°C (68°F)
Friday : Few showers. Min 13°C (55.4°F) Max 17°C (62.6°F)

At least it’s not going to be particularly cold.

Apart from the weather I’m wondering whether or not to bring my Tablet PC to the conference. I think there’ll be wireless access in the Perth Convention Centre, but I don’t know how much it will cost and in any case last time I checked the wireless card on the Tablet was kaput. Also, do I want to lug the Tablet around with me all day?
