Book haul

The Save the Children booksale is currently on (it finishes on Wednesday).

Of course, I had to go. We went back a total of three times.

I took the picture below on Saturday morning, using my phone. Lots of Perth people like books.

I have a substantial haul – a total of 91 books. M was a lot less crazed and bought a total of 16 books.

Below, the pile after Friday and Saturday’s forays.

The pile grew again after an hour-long visit on Sunday.

The languages section didn’t seem as impressive as in previous years. Only have one dictionary in the haul.

I bought a bit more poetry than usual, and no cookbooks.

Finds:
The snow leopard by Peter Mathiessen (have wanted to read this for a while)
Ten Granta magazines (uh, oh, I can feel a collection coming on…)
Wild surmise by Dorothy Porter (didn’t even know this one existed!)

Silliest title:
Passing time in the loo volume 1 edited by S. Anderson (should we really leave this in the loo?)

Total spent:
$241 (!)

    It was great fun. At one point the thought occurred to me that perhaps I enjoy the rummaging around at the sale itself more than the actual eventual reading of the books themselves, but having accessioned them all on LibraryThing and now starting to read one new book, I conclude that the whole process, from anticipation, participation, acquisition and perusal, is entirely pleasurable. (Can you tell I am reading Mary Renault at the moment? ;) )

    Oh, I love The Charioteer, a beautifully written love story. I am a fan of her historical fiction from way back – my Ancient History high school teacher advised us to read them for background. They’re superb! and meticulously researched. The Last of the Wine is my favourite, but the Alexander series comes a close second.
