Barcamp: Scott Barnes - web developer, Microsoft evangelist

Silverlight: why Scott joined Microsoft.

Is it a smartarse way of saying Flash?

Kate is recording Scott’s talk right next to me. (I can’t keep up with Scott’s jokes.)

Says Transformers (the movie) was a religious experience.

Vista is kinda slow, says Scott. General chuckling around the room.

Barcamp: M-learning (Sue Waters)

Sue Waters - Challenger TAFE

M-learning

Digital learners learn better when engaged.

E-learning - any sort of delivery facilitated by electronic device

M-learning - portable technologies - allabout being mobile.

Mobility now like net in 96 - then everyone discounted the Internet, worried that it would just encourage games. Smartphone and PPC mag (Feb/Mar 2007 Vol 10, no 1)

TAFE moving from campus-based delivery - into the workforce.

Different assumptions:

Uni - elearn avail for every unit

Vocational and tech ed - not assumed

Trevor Bennett (ECU)

Kate Quinn - differences in how TAFE uses interactive tools to create materials

Uni - widespread, automated

VET- localized, cottage

Unis not thinking about pedagogy - just sticking content on web.. not thinking about how learners learn

Engage not enrage!!

Mobile networks very expensive.

But most students have mobiles!!

Yesterday - iPhone Day - was a very important day.

Decline of the web browser? Silverlight is geared for mobile use…

Proust reading

Thanks, Michael, for the five tips on reading Proust.

I have achieved your first tip at least:

1. Buy In Search of Lost Time, all of it, up front. Making the investment will increase the likelihood that you’ll finish. (Imagine the ignominy of bringing the unread volumes to a used-book store!)

Now I need to work on the others, especially #5, perseverance.
