Proust reading

Thanks, Michael, for the five tips on reading Proust.

I have achieved your first tip at least:

1. Buy In Search of Lost Time, all of it, up front. Making the investment will increase the likelihood that you’ll finish. (Imagine the ignominy of bringing the unread volumes to a used-book store!)

Now I need to work on the others, especially #5, perseverance.

I hope these suggestions help, CW. Once you get beyond Swann’s Way, it gets more difficult to turn back. By then you have momentum!

I won’t harrow your soul by telling you that I’ve just embarked on my biannual reread of The Lord of the Rings…

Thanks Michael, I’ll just have to keep persevering!

Sheena, I actually read the entire LOTR every couple years too. And I don’t find that harrowing at all!

I’m afraid I didn’t get beyond Swann’s Way. I just didn’t get on with it, which was odd – I love Ulysses, for example, and I’m currently cracking through War and Peace. Good luck with it!
