Barcamp: Gary Barber - the WordPress loop

Gary’s talk

From the start, assumes that we all know what WP is, we know what php is, but are not necessarily happy coding. (He thought of doing the talk in lolcat but it got too difficult.)

The Loop is the core of WP. Php distributed across the system, along display of posts, comments and the display of your blog as a whole.

You don’t actually need to know how it works (sign of good software) - it just does.

One central control point with requests going through index.php.

Gary talks us through the loop: header, middle, footer.

Kathryn’s write up of this is way more detailed than mine…

“The Loop is breeding” - it is all through your blog (search, comments, etc).

Barcamp wiki

The wiki is up and there are already some presentations available.

Barcamp: Kathryn and Second Life

Feels like it’s her own personal train set, she is very interested in it but doesn’t expect others to be (but lots of people seem to want to hear about it).

Kathryn’s presentation is on her wiki.

Stresses that it’s not a better interface than other existing virtual worlds, it’s just that there’s critical mass there.

People are realising that there’s no reason to replicate real life structures in Second Life. Kathryn says that over the next few months things will change and could get very weird…

[I’m hopeless this morning, I can’t be bothered to live blog]
