Roll on the weekend

The past week has been so busy that I haven’t had much time to write. I’ve had all these topics floating around in my head, but I think I really need to sit down and work out what I want to say. Thankfully I haven’t had the time to sit down and produce a two thousand word stream-of-consciousness blurt, which would probably be really painful to read. (And probably excruciatingly embarrassing, too!)

I’m still pondering Anna’s meme and wondering what I’m going to write about. Yes, I’m hopeless, but I can’t come up with three things I know that are worthy of writing about. Oh, and I did that slang quiz, and got 18/20, so You’re a little ripper! You have a near perfect grasp of the colourful gab and can probably make yourself understood in most social occasions, such as Gazza’s weekly Barbie… but I bet you can’t throw a boomerang!”

For the time being, while I get my act together (and wait for this weekend, when hopefully I’ll have some time to sit and write), I’ll point you to the blog of The Rambling Librarian. A lot of what Ivan has written lately has given me a lot to think about. Like what being a librarian is all about, blogging, .. and.. mooncakes!

While we’re on the subject of chosen professions, I have also been reading Random Acts of Reality and being thankful that mine is a relatively unstressful profession, especially when compared to the life of a paramedic. And although you work in London and I will probably never ever need your assistance - thank you Tom Reynolds!

For sheer reading pleasure I have been enjoying Greek Tragedy. As the author herself says, “Oy!” Another blogger whose writing I admire.

And that’s just the blogs! I have recently discovered Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series, which is wonderful! I love that feeling you get when you read something for the first time and realise you have found a gem. It’s like that first date feeling when everything is new and the possibilities are endless… pity it doesn’t last forever. Thank your Dad for recommending it, MR - thank you Mr Robinson!

Baubles the Cat, part 2

Is it just my imagination, or has Flickr been quite slow and buggy these past few days? I was going to use it to share this delightful picture with you, but now it seems to have gone down.

This blob you see is the back view of Baubles the Cat. We had her fur shaved off a couple of weeks ago, because she had developed dreadlocks. She looks very funny at the moment as all the fur on her body has been shaved off, leaving only her head and cheeks, tail, and feet in their natural state. As a result she looks like she is wearing ugg boots.

The main reason I wanted to use Flickr to show you this delightful scene is because I wanted to point out Baubles the Cat’s udder to you. Looking at the picture, I guess you can see it the pink blob of tummy even without a Flickr note to point it out. Her fur usually hides the tummy - without it, all is revealed! With her colouring, she does kind of look like a strange, feline cow, I think!

Although she looks pretty grotesque at the moment, the very short fur makes Baubles the Cat very velvety and nice to pat.

Here she is in bed - in the guest room. While Cherry and Mister were staying the room was Out of Bounds, and she couldn’t stand it! As soon as the guests had departed for Sydney she rushed in and made sure she lay in the bed. Note part of M’s games collection in the bookshelf.

Baubles the Cat on CW’s lap.

Edit 3 October 2005: There is also a Baubles the Cat Flickr set for a more varied view of our cat.

What a weekend

It just doesn’t seem right that I have to go to work today. It’s a public holiday but not a university holiday, so us poor suffering university employees will have to make the long trek in over emptyish roads this morning.

Not only is it a public holiday, but I feel like I still need some time to recover from the mega weekend. Being Dad’s 6oth birthday, we had houseguests - Cherry and Mister were here from Over East to help celebrate (you guys are always such good houseguests, and tell Mister that the memory of his Little Britain impersonations are still amusing me this morning! :) ) - and lots of wining and dining and visits and general catching up to do. My system will probably need all week to recover from the three varieties of cake (black forest, pandan, baked cheese), two six-course dinners, wonderful Little Creatures beer, and the cooked breakfast!

As usual, I either forgot the camera when we went on various outings, or got myself seated in a cul-de-sac so that movement was severely restricted and phototaking all but impossible without causing much upheaval.

And finally, in the midst of all the social to-do, I’ve gone and started playing World of Warcraft again after a three month break. M and I were sitting around at home waiting to hear if the systems at work were going to meltdown any further (there was an IT ‘outage’ at work over the weekend, and M had the good fortune to be on call), and it seemed like a fun thing to do at the time. (If you’re on the Silver Hand server, look up Sigrid the orc, hunter. If this doesn’t make sense, don’t worry, it shouldn’t, unless you have ever played a MMORPG before. Hmm… maybe this is a topic for a post some other time.)
