Da Vinci sleep

The time has gone really quickly this morning cause I have been looking at Flickr. I am starting to think there must be a Flickr group for anything and everything. I have found the fountain pens group, the fat cats group, and now librarians’ desks!

Was also looking for the script of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer micro sleeps (as pointed out by Mooiness), and finally found it. The episode is The Friars Club.

KRAMER: Hey everybody. (to Jerry) Listen, uh, do me a favour, will you? I got a hot date tonight with Connie. Knock on my door, wake me up in twenty minutes, alright?

JERRY: Catnap?

KRAMER: No, no, no, no. (comes in) This is evolutionary. I been reading this book, on Leonardo de Vinci. See, that means ‘from Vinci’, d’you know that?

JERRY: (deadpan) That must be some book.

KRAMER: Yeah, well, turns out that the master slept only twenty minutes every three hours. Now, that works out to two and a half extra days, that I’m awake per week, every week. Which means, if I live to be eighty, I will have lived the equivalent of a hundred and five years.

JERRY: Just imagine how much more you’ll accomplish.

KRAMER: Oh, I got a lot of things in the hopper, buddy.

Kramer heads for the door.

JERRY: I didn’t know you had a hopper.

KRAMER: (smiling) Oh, I got a hopper. A big hopper.

That series was just classic.

Just for the record, I am getting enough sleep (between 7-8 hours a night) - I don’t think I could ‘micro sleep’ like Kramer and stay productive (or sane)!

[Edit 1 July 8:14am: After reading this post, M says he would like to try Da Vinci sleeping sometime! ¡Ay caramba!]

The blogging experiment

M still considers blogging to be the “indulgence of an individual”. I suppose he is correct to some extent, but I think he is not considering the other aspects of blogging. This blog started out as an experiment, and I am quite surprised that I actually have readers now. I keep writing because

  • I enjoy it
  • it’s good to have a reason to write - and most days I do have something to say
  • it’s something to do at 5:30am
  • I am enjoying ‘meeting’ other people
  • I am still playing with different blogging tools

I have no illusions that I am making some great contribution to the blogosphere like some others out there, but I am having a pretty good time with this so if doing something cause it’s fun is indulgent, I guess I am :)

I must be infected by the blogging bug though as I find myself thinking about things to write about during the day. And I am musing over the idea of starting an Australian librarians’ blog (will need input from others I think, a big project).

What would make blogging perfect for me would be if I could actually write, and post, my entries in fountain pen. Yeh, I know it’s completely illogical!

This morning I seem to have a bit of a headache. I didn’t hear the alarm when it went off and only gradually became aware of the radio after a couple of minutes.

Winter

Testing Blogger Images
Picture for Israd: this is a view of our hall and the front door
(I don’t seem to have many pictures of the house!)

10 things I like about winter:

1. those clear, clear mornings when everything feels crisp and fresh
2. the green of all the grass verges around Perth – in summer time they are dry and brown unless you spend time watering them
3. mushrooms that sprout in the mulch
4. thick hearty soups
5. sitting around an open fire drinking hot tea
6. sitting under a doona with M and Baubles the Cat, watching tv – very snuggly
7. hot baths
8. lying in a warm bed listening to the rain on the roof
9. being able to wear your favourite jumper
10. the smell of wood fires

10 things I dislike about winter:

1. those clear, clear mornings where it is freezing and getting out of bed feels like torture
2. muddy puddles that get your feet wet so that they are cold all day
3. the smell of damp
4. eating too much soup
5. open fires that smoke and make things sooty
6. having to sit under a doona when you watch tv, cause it’s so darn cold!
7. not being able to have a bath – we don’t actually have a bath in our house
8. lying in a warm bed listening to the rain on the roof and wondering if the leak in the kitchen ceiling is getting bigger
9. pulling your favourite jumper out of the winter clothes box and finding it has HOLES
10. the smell of wood fires; sometimes there is so much smoke from all those fires around the neighbourhood it makes me cough!
